One of my jobs in addition to this blog is teach kids how to play music. I’ve noticed some kids make a commitment to improve all the time. Some kids barely give enough effort to get their part learned. Then there are some who have no idea what effort is. Of the three, I think the most frustrating are those in the second group. Teaching by its very nature means helping kids understand what is necessary to make improvements. Kids that only care enough to get by never go beyond themselves, no matter the incentive or consequence.
